Path of the Omegathon - Round Two

Posted by Dover

I arrived at PAX early on Saturday for what was to be the first of three rounds in which I would compete that day. To be honest, rounds two through four were the ones about which I was the most worried as far as competing. I felt that if I could perservere until Sunday, I stood a good shot of winning it all. We met in the same place for our Round Two challenge: Four-player Calling All Cars.

Again, the Omeganauts were divided into groups, although this time the setup involved four games of four players each. A lot of people were fairly vocal that they hadn’t played this game due to its PS3 exclusivity, and we all know the cost that particular system would necessitate. I was fortunate to have a friend who loaned me his PS3 for two months so that I could practice. My friends and I ended up playing four-player games every Friday over that timespan. I ended up enjoying the game a lot more than I thought, and if the price of the PS3 ever becomes reasonable, I will definitely download it.

Moving on, our names were chosen, and quite ironically might I add, out of a Jenga tube before the round started. My lot dictated that I was to play the final game for that round. Our game ended with me in a tie for second with five points and Steve (Majin23x) losing the round with one point scored. I only had two points until about the last minute so of the game before I was able to get a quick single score and a two-point ramp score. Once I had that four point buffer, I grabbed the criminal and drove as far away from the police station as I could get and ran the clock out. Nobody came after me until the very end, but I blew by them to almost score again before time ran out.

I felt badly about doing that to Steve, as I had gotten to know him on the forums a few weeks before PAX. We are both Midwesterners by birth and I felt like I was betraying him by doing what I did, but I would have to assume that he would have done the same should the situation have been reversed. Steve admitted to me ahead of time that he had never played the game, and only watched a few YouTube videos. No substitute for experience, I suppose, and luck only plays so much of a part in this tournament. Being the great guy that he is, Steve rooted for me to win the rest of the tournament. Truly a class act.
